WPA 400 - Technical Data Sheet
WPA 400 is an elastomeric, fibre reinforced waterproofing membrane based on high performance polymer technology. Designed for a range of under tile waterproofing applications, WPA 400 offers excellent adhesion properties and outstanding low water vapour transmission properties. Fully compatible with polymer modified cement-based tiles adhesives, screeds and renders. The unique formulation provides excellent workability and film build.
Balconies, podiums and decks
Waterproofing of areas subsequently covered by ceramic or stone tiles
Waterproofing applications requiring high vapour barrier properties
Features and Benefits
Class III membrane in accordance with AS 4858 & AS 4654.1
Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
Completely resistant to re-emulsification (when fully cured)
Extremely low VOC content
Compatible with a wide range of tile adhesives
WPA 400 is suitable for concrete, render, screeds, block work, fibre-cement sheeting, wet area grade plasterboard, PAA certified structural and marine plywood and Scyon sheeting. Metal, PVC and other non-porous substrates surfaces must be primed with WPA 160 All Purpose primer. Always contact the manufacturer if there is any doubt about the suitability of substrates.
All surfaces to be waterproofed must be firm, clean, dry, sound and smooth. All laitance, grease, oil, wax, curing compounds, loose material, paint and any other contaminants which may reduce or prevent adhesion must be mechanically removed. Masonry surfaces must be pointed flush and surface defects repaired. New concrete must be cured for minimum 28 days. All concrete must be completely dry and primed with WPA 360 water-based primer, WPA 460 or WPA 560 two-part water-based epoxy.
Render and cement screeds must be cured for a minimum of 7 days. Damp render or screeds must be allowed to thoroughly dry or primed with WPA 460 or WPA 560 two-part water-based epoxy.
Fibre cement sheeting, water resistant plasterboard, PAA structural and marine plywood and Scyon sheeting must be installed in accordance with the manufacturers’ installation requirements.
Install a bond breaker/fillet using Admil SupaSeal PU at all horizontal and vertical transitions. For optimal performance, incorporate WPA Elastoband at all transitions.
Static Crack Treatment
For cracks less than 1mm, clean cracks thoroughly before filling Admil SupaSeal PU. WPA 400 cannot span gaps. For dynamic cracks
/expansion joints and control joints, the use of WPA Elastoband system is recommended. Contact the WPA Technical Department for further advice.
Porous substrates must be primed with WPA 360 water based or WPA SB solvent-based primer. Damp substrates and Scyon sheeting must be primed with WPA 460 or WPA 560 two-part epoxy primer. Dense substrates must be primed with WPA 160 All Purpose Primer. All aluminium, PVC and other non-porous surfaces must be primed with WPA 160 All Purpose Primer. Apply the primer to the prepared substrate by using a brush or roller in accordance with the relevant product’s Technical Data Sheet. Allow the primer to fully dry prior to commencing the application of WPA 400.
Prior to application, stir the contents thoroughly. Using a brush or roller, apply the first coat of WPA 400 after the primer has sufficiently dried. Apply an even and consistent coat of approximately 0.75mm wet film thickness. Once the first coat has dried, apply a second of WPA 400 at right angles to the first coat. Apply an even and consistent coat of approximately 0.75mm wet film thickness.
WPA 400 must be applied with a minimum of two coats to achieve a dry film thickness of not less than 1.0mm (1000 microns). Test the depth of coats with a wet film thickness gauge at regular intervals during installation.
Note: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear splash proof goggles and rubber or PVC gloves at all times.
Performance Data and Physical Properties @23°C & 55% RH
Allow 4 hours between coats.
Allow 24-48 hours cure time prior to tiling.
Flood test - 7 days.
Allow longer drying times in cool or damp weather conditions.

Do not apply WPA 400:
Over damp, wet or contaminated substrates;
If it is raining or if rain is imminent;
Directly over any existing coatings;
Directly to particle board flooring. (Ceramic tile underlay must be installed);
As an exposed membrane;
As a high wear surface for foot or vehicle traffic;
Where ambient or surface temperatures are below 10°C or greater than 35°C;
To areas subject to negative hydrostatic pressure or rising damp;
To areas of continuous immersion such as swimming pools, ponds, water features or water tanks.
To reduce the possibility of surface contamination, it is recommended that tiling be carried out as soon as the membrane has cured.
Tools and minor spills can be cleaned with water while product is still wet. Cured WPA 400 can be cleaned with an alcohol-based solvent or by mechanical means.
WPA 400 is available in 4 litre and 15 litre pails.
Floors - 1.5 litres per m²at 1mm dry film thickness (10m² per drum).
Walls - 0.75 litres per m² at 0.5mm dry film thickness (20m² per drum).
The coverage figures are theoretical due to wastage and depending on the porosity and profile of the substrate, coverage figures may be reduced.
Unopened pails can be stored for up to 12 months in a cool, dry and weatherproof environment. If stored at high temperatures, the shelf life may be reduced.
If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre (Phone Australia 131 126).
Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
If skin or hair contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water. If swelling, redness, blistering or irritation occurs seek medical assistance.
If in eyes, wash out immediately with water. In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensible precaution to seek medical advice.
Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water to drink. Never give anything by the mouth to an unconscious patient. If vomiting occurs give further water. Seek medical advice.
Notes to Physician
Prevent from entering drains or waterways. Absorb with sand, earth or spill control material. Collect in properly labelled containers for disposal in accordance with local statuary requirements.
